Every year on the day after Super Bowl Sunday, we celebrate one of our body’s most important functions.  National Poop Day is a fun day to celebrate and educate ourselves about the importance of our body’s excretory system.

Just like with humans, the quality and quantity of your dog’s excretions can say  a lot about their general health.  Here are some important things to know about what’s coming out of your dog.

  1. Color – Depending on your pup’s regular diet the color of poo should range from light to dark brown.  Sudden color changes may indicate that your dog has eaten something out of the ordinary.  Prolonged discoloration may indicate that one of your dog’s bodily systems is out of whack.  In particular, persistent green, black, or gray feces warrants a check up with your veterinarian.
  2. Consistency – There are many ways to describe the consistency of doggy doodoo and a lot of them seem to involve descriptions typically associated with food.  A good #2 is firm and segmented, but not crumbly or pebbly.  A dog that strains for a long time when going is likely struggling with diarrhea or constipation.  It is common to see digestive issues like soft stools in dogs that are anxious.
  3. Contents – Routine examination of your dog nuggets can hold some surprises!  We’ve seen rope shreds from dog toys, small children’s toys, crayons, condoms, socks and so much more!  Dogs are scavengers and always have their noses to the ground.  Some dogs are compulsive rock eaters or eat non-food as a result of resource guarding.  It’s important to teach your dog to share for this reason!

Does Your dog Eat Poo?

Some dogs enjoy their own form of fresh chocolate pudding.  If you have a a dog who eats their own or other’s feces it’s important to first rule out any nutritional deficiencies.  Ask your vet about adding a probiotic or vitamin to ensure their trace mineral requirements are met.  After that, keep your yard clean by removing feces promptly and/or keeping your dog leashed.  Finally, teach your dog an incompatible behavior such as recall.  If you’re dog happily runs to you to collect their reward post elimination, there’s less chance that he’ll stick around for seconds.
